So a person could develop a very successful career if they build a solid foundation of the right certifications, practical know-how and the will to win.
The first thing to stress when looking at getting your own training sorted is that not all colleges and training companies provide like for like courses. Consider your search for the right courses as an assignment in itself. Take your time to find the best option for you - you'll save time in the long-run if you research lots of sites, and have a much better perspective on the direction to take. Maybe you've decided that a career in fitness training would suit you, but you're not sure where to specialise. Here are a few things to think about... Different fitness trainers see their jobs in different ways, as some know a lot more about certain things than others. Fitness training isn't simply about learning the best cardio techniques - sure clients will turn to you for that type of instruction, but they should also expect to be able to get guidance from you on underlying fitness issues.
Seek out training that offers you a good scientific basis. There's psychology, kinesiology, anatomy, physiology and biomechanics to learn. Then there's nutrition, weight management, first aid, massage and motivation. Add to that equipment, strength training, cardio and group workouts. Of course there are also many health and safety requirements to be familiar with.
On top of all that, those who choose to become self-employed (and many personal trainers are) will need to know how to produce a business plan, attract clients, understand the law and deal with finance and business banking. Ouch...
Before you feel overwhelmed, realise that you can start without knowing everything, and it's not unusual for people to specialise and do very well focusing on one area.
There's nutrition and weight control. All food contains nutrients of some sort - study nutrition to learn about which foods do what for us and why. Study the digestive system, metabolism and how we absorb food. Study weight issues, calorific values and the effect different life-stages have on the amount of weight people carry. Other aspects of nutrition and weight management are balanced diets, healthy eating, sports nutrition and burning up calories.
How about becoming a personal trainer? There's a great demand in some areas for one-to-one exercise coaching. Seek out training that deals with physiology - in other words a science-based in-depth study of the structure of the body so with each client you can work out exactly what you're dealing with.
Maybe you spend a lot of time in the gym and would like to turn your hobby into a career and become a gym instructor. Seek out a training programme that covers both practice and science, and leads to a recognised certification. You'll need a good grounding in how to assess the fitness level of clients when they first join, and how to create the right level and pace of training. Added to this your learning must include equipment, cardio and strength routines, warm ups and their importance and teaching techniques.
The treatment and prevention of injuries can be a valuable add-on to your health and fitness career. If you can see yourself working in this field, you might consider getting into rehabilitation and qualify as a Yoga Instructor or a Reiki Practitioner for example.
You could train to carry out health and fitness assessments, and perhaps bolt this onto your specialist area. Learn how to measure and monitor a client's fitness level by carrying out a variety of assessments. You might incorporate checks for flexibility, posture, muscle strength, endurance and blood pressure for example.
