Careers With Plumbing Certifications

Increase Your Income By Becoming a Certified Plumber

No matter what industries are declining or prospering, we can't do without plumbers. It's true to say we've seen a temporary lull in construction, but the demand for domestic plumbers still exceeds supply. How often do we hear about the trouble someone had finding a plumber to mend their heating system? And as fewer people are moving house, more and more choose to upgrade their existing homes with new kitchens and bathrooms. So if it's time to make a change, a closer look at a plumbing career could offer everything you need.

Build A Business Of Your Own

Something that appeals to many adult re-trainers is the concept of being their own boss. Generally speaking most newly trained plumbers over thirty go for domestic work that they can take care of by themselves. It's a sensible direction to take as there's plenty of money and jobs available for the right people. As with all the trades, good plumbers pick up a lot of their business via recommendations from satisfied customers.

A training college will cover all your trade skills, but your attitude and manners will be down to you. (After all you never know who's considering your services!) Politeness and good manners will always be remembered.

More often than not, plumbers in the commercial environment are employed to work a maximum forty hour week. If you plan to work for private customers though, your hours can be much more varied. Householders are often out at work themselves, and plumbers who are prepared to work some evenings and weekends can significantly boost their income.

A Good and Secure Income

There's always work available for plumbers and heating engineers. Once you've got yourself trained and certified, you need to get good at promoting yourself. It's fair to say that your days are filled with solving people's problems - if someone's had a burst pipe, or no water for hours, they'll welcome you like a long lost son! The fact that you're moving around working in different properties all the time makes the work really interesting as well.

To be competitive but still make decent money you'll need to get good at quoting accurately for jobs. You can either charge a daily rate, or a price for the job. Whichever you do, make sure you've included all your expenses. Once you've done a few, it will all become very routine. Look for training companies that help out with this.

How Can I Get Started?

All industry recognised plumbing training courses lead to C&G (City & Guilds) certifications as a minimum. Students leaving school will typically go to college full-time followed by work experience and NVQ's. It's more common though for re-trainers to learn their trade part-time so they can still afford to pay their bills! It's the private training companies that tend to attract mature entrants, because they service their needs better. Mature students then will generally pay more up front for commercial training courses, but fine-tune their training to suit the work they'll get into.

Ancillary Training

Whichever course you decide on, you should emerge with at least basic plumbing skills in sanitation systems, hot and cold water systems and more. If, like many plumbers you bolt-on a few extra skills, you'll be able to complete projects yourself without having to bring in other trades. Some plumbers can also do tiling, plastering and some electrical work.

You don't have to take everything at once, but add more skills as you go along. You'll attract a bigger customer base and keep more of the profits for yourself. There'll be no waiting around for bathroom fitters or tilers if you can do the work yourself - and the customer will be much less inconvenienced.

If you're looking to change careers and want reliable, well-paid on-going work, this could well be the right choice for you.
